Tesla Q3 earnings call:
Question: Where do you see Optimus design changes still happening?
Konstantinos:
The hand is the most challenging hardware area. Most of the electromechanical systems are high-confidence. The hand is more complicated from an electromechanical point of view compared to the actuators for locomotion systems. Some bespoke gears are also carrying a lot of the burden for reliability.
Elon:
It’s mostly the hands. It’s fine-tuning of the hand design, and the fingers especially. Human hands self-repair; robot hands don’t. It’s hard to make hands that can handle wear and tear but are squishy enough to handle delicate things.
Tesla's Q3 earnings deck: "Optimus production began in Fremont on our high-volume lines. The bots coming off this line are the first production-quality bots that we have manufactured. While we will continue to iterate on the hardware and manufacturing process, we have proven that the current manufacturing process for Optimus is suitable for a commercial product."
